SHIN PADS play an essential role in football injury prevention. However, there are some shin injuries that even they can't prevent. Kieron Dyer suffered with these for a period whist at Newcastle United. Bolton Wanderers full back Tyrone Mears was also a victim of the condition, which is generally caused when impact loading sport, such as football and running affect the lower leg. THE ACHILLES TENDON, is the tendon that runs at the back of the calf and inserts into the back of the heel bone. It is comprised of two major muscles and one lesser muscle. The two major muscles are the soleus and gastrocnemius, with a small contribution from a third muscle called the plantaris. These muscles form a common tendon called the Achilles tendon, which inserts into the heel bone.

It really first got known in football circles when Paul Gascoigne ruptured his in the 1991 FA Cup final playing for Tottenham against Nottingham Forest. Other high profile players to have suffered injury to the anterior cruciate, include Alan Shearer when for Blackburn Rovers and Roy Keane playing for Manchester United against Leeds.
