Sunderland left it late securing their place for the start of the 2016-17 Premier League season. After a shaky start Sam Allardyce came in and did what ‘Big Sam’ does. Setting his team up as a solid unit, becoming hard to beat. He then adopted a system to play on the counterattack maximising the experience and finishing of Jermaine Defoe.

As much as Defoe’s goals did the business, many observers saw the excellent form of Dutch defender Patrick van Aanholt as a major factor to Sunderland's success. He improved immensely in his defensive duties but his attacking abilities really caught the eye.

Having come over from Holland as a teenager to sign for Chelsea, he found multi-million pound stars staked in front of him on his route to the 1st team.

He did make some appearances under Mourinho there and learnt from the lIkes of John Terry, after a few loan moves he joined Sunderland.

Van Aanholt’s style of play have seen many compare him to the brilliant French full-back Patrick Evra of Juventus.

With his pacy bursts up the wing, skilful dribbling and spectacular it made perfect business sense for Sunderland to tie him to a new deal.

Sunderland will no doubt be looking to avoid a relegation battle next time around and Allardyce will of course add to his squad. One thing is for sure though, Dutch star van Aanholt will need to be at his excellent best at the Stadium of Light for them to move forward.
